How to Verify a Legitimate Debt Collector Before You Pay

Nov 19, 2025

Knowing how to verify a legitimate debt collector is crucial. Debt collection scammers are a real threat to financial stability and personal security. They use sophisticated tactics, including fake caller IDs or email addresses that appear to be from a trusted source, and knowing details that it seems only a legitimate debt collector would know.

Unfortunately, we’ve experienced scammers firsthand. Someone pretending to be from Capital Recovery Corp has sent our clients threatening phone calls and emails, demanding money and threatening jail time for non-payment. Often, they’ll do this with official-looking emails that look real but are not from us.

Capital Recovery NEVER sends these calls and emails. Here’s what to look out for and how to verify a debt collection call or email isn’t a scam..

Check the Phone Number and URL

The easiest way to verify a debt collection call is to check the phone number the call is coming from. Here’s a list of all verified phone numbers for Capital Recovery Corp:

Similarly, look at any emails you receive claiming to be from us. Make sure any links direct you to https://capitalrecovery.net/, and double-check any phone numbers listed above. If you’re unsure, just hang up (or don’t respond to the email) and call us directly.

Look or Listen for Validation Information

Debt collectors are required by law to provide validation information, certain details that validate their legitimacy as a debt collection agency. Look at any email communication or listen to any call to ensure these details are accurate. Here’s what you can request/verify if anyone calls claiming to represent Capital Recovery Corporation:

  • A statement that the communication is from a debt collector
  • Your name and mailing information, along with the name and mailing information of the debt collector
  • The name of the creditor you owe the debt to (more than one creditor may be listed)
  • The account number associated with the debt (if any)
  • An itemization of the current amount of the debt that reflects interest, fees, payments, and credits since a particular date
  • The current amount of the debt when the notice is provided
  • Information you can use to reply to the debt collector, such as if you believe the debt is not yours or if the amount is wrong
  • An end date for 30 days which you can dispute the debt
  • You may see other information on your notice, but the information listed above generally must be included. If you think a debt collector failed to give you this information, you can submit a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

If they are unwilling to provide this information, or the information provided does not match your records, bills, and bank statements, you’re likely being scammed. If you suspect this, please alert us immediately and file a complaint with the CFPB.

Keep Detailed Financial Records

Debt collection scammers are counting on people being too stressed or distracted to notice they’re being scammed. Knowing who your creditors are, what their notices look like, and payment amount/scheduling details makes it easier to mentally flag inaccurate information. Taking the time to slow down and verify could prevent a much more stressful situation.
